New Coaster Confirmed for 2013 at Cedar Point

B&M Winged Style Coaster

Cedar Point will be building a $25-million winged coaster for 2013, a company memo has revealed. Similar in design to Wild Eagle, this coaster will take the place of Disaster Transport and surrounding area in the front of the park. It’s also set to fly over the front gate to make a statement, similar to Leviathan. We’ll be investigating further on our upcoming trip: June 18-22. Read the entire article from The Sandusky Register below:

Cedar Fair stands ready to spend big money on a new roller coaster for 2013 at Cedar Point that will change the park landscape.
Code-named “CP Alt.Winged,” the coaster will have the “longest drop, run the fastest and be the longest ride” of its kind, Cedar Fair CEO Matt Ouimet wrote in Feb. 15 memo to Cedar Fair’s board of directors.
The total projected cost of the project is $25 million, a price that includes removing the park’s Space Spiral and Disaster Transport rides and restructuring the park entrance.
Ouimet was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
Lee Alexakos, corporate vice president of marketing, declined to confirm the information in the memo.
“We have not announced any plans for 2013 but we did announce a $25 million investment,” Alexakos said. “This will be one of the largest capital expenditures ever.”
Alexakos said that with any ride or attraction Cedar Point undertakes, the company is always looking to set records.
The Swiss-based Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers is set to design the new ride, which was described in the memo as having a “Front Gate Statement— a roller coaster that flies overhead, rolls and flies back— highly visible above guests entering the park.”
The firm designed Cedar Point’s Raptor.
A winged coaster is designed to suspend riders on wings to the sides of the rails so there is no track above or below the guest.
Engineering schematics show a proposed coaster with gravity defying twists, curves and rolls.
“Rob Decker (Cedar Fair VP of planning and design) and others have done a great job of creating a compelling, economically attractive new coaster for Cedar Point,” Ouimet wrote. “We believe this particular ride design with this particular manufacturer balances the desire for marketable innovation and risk associated with early adaptations of prototypes.”
Bolliger & Mabillard designed the first winged coaster for installation in Italy at a park known as Gardaland. The Six Flags Great American park outside of Chicago also has one of the company’s winged coasters, called X-Flight.
The new ride at Cedar Point could promise to be a work horse available to guests at almost any time they are in the park.
“Rob talked to operators of the first one in Italy and found no unanticipated negatives and very high ride reliability (less than 1 percent operational downtime).
Design plans show the new ride with a 170-foot tall lift that will fly overhead of park guests entering the park. It will have the longest track and longest ride time of any coaster of its style as it flies overhead, rolls and then fly back.
The huge roller coaster will dominate the front gate and the track will travel over a large parking area at the park.
“We have several coasters that cover parking lots,” Ouimet wrote. “Not necessarily ideal, but certainly acceptable given tight site constraints and the amount of land such attractions require.”
Disaster Transport and the Space Spiral both would have to come down if the site plan currently under consideration is chosen.
Part of the $25 million investment will also include renovations and upgrades at the park entrance from the parking lot.
Cedar Point general manger John Hildebrandt was not available for comment on Tuesday.

Leviathan Review, Merchandise and more!

Today marked Season Passholder Preview day at Canada’s Wonderland, an annual right of passage that marks the official start of summer for theme park fanatics in Canada. Thousands of season passholders braved the chilly temperatures to brave the newest attraction for the 2012 season, Leviathan. Reaching a terror inducing 306 feet high, with over 5,400 feet of track and a top speed of 148km/h, Leviathan is B&M’s first coaster to reach over 300 feet high. It’s the third tallest traditional lift-style coaster in the world, after Steel Dragon in Japan and Millennium Force at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

We have been counting down the days for the Sneak Preview, and finally got to ride this monster. We weren’t disappointed. Here’s our review of the ride, along with some pictures of the new merchandise offerings and general areas of the park:

Luminosity to entertain at Cedar Point this summer

This conceptual artist rendering shows the Luminosity stage, where 30 talented performers will entertain guests as special effects light up the night at Cedar Point.

In what looks like an event inspired by California Adventure’s Electronica and the soon to begin Mad T Party, Cedar Point has announced a new nighttime experience called Luminosity that will electrify the night this summer. With dancers, fire, pyrotechnics, music, lasers, projections, a DJ and much more, this event looks super cool. It’s nice to see parks adding upbeat and fun events that aren’t just quick 10 minute shows at the end of the night. Dance parties seem to be the new craze at parks, and we love them! Sort of family friendly raves, minus the drugs and craziness that comes with those. The event starts on June 8. Check out all the details and a video preview below (the stock music in the video sounds a whole lot like “Backstreets Back” if you ask us):

"Avatar" jumps from 3-D screens to theme park experience at Walt Disney World

In one of the greatest announcements I’ve heard in a while from Disney Parks, they have announced a mega “Avatar” themed land for Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida. All the details are below in the official press release, although they are very sparse. There are no details on what type of attraction or attractions this will be, and they are simply calling it a “land” for the time being. It is a great fit for Animal Kingdom, and considering the movie was groundbreaking in so many ways, it opens the door for some amazing attraction possibilities. Will we see a 4-D film combined with a dark ride experience, or will Disney use a new type of technology never seen before like what Universal did with “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey“. I’m thinking it would be incredible for this attraction to exist indoors, as to make the illuminated glow forest an all encompassing experience. I remember seeing the film when it came out thinking what a breathtaking theme park experience it would be. What has me most excited is that the press release is saying “lands”, as in more than one! To be clear, these lands will exist in different parks around the world. One must remember these plans are all based on the assumed success of the 2 sequels coming down the pipeline, and let’s not forget they are always subject to change like with the Fantasyland expansion. This is a big play for Disney, the project is reported to be costing around $400 million dollars. “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” was a major risk for Universal to invest in (and reportedly cost around $265 million to build), and ended up paying major dividends in the end. Does “Avatar” have the legs to sustain the same amount of success for Disney. What do you think?

DISNEY, FOX AND JAMES CAMERON TO BRING AVATAR TO LIFE AT DISNEY PARKS
Long-term agreement will bring AVATAR themed lands to Disney parks, with the first at Walt Disney World in Orlando

BURBANK (September 20, 2011) – Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide is joining forces with visionary filmmaker James Cameron and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the world of AVATAR to life at Disney parks. Through an exclusive agreement announced today by Disney, Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox, Disney will partner with Cameron and producing partner Jon Landau to create themed lands that will give theme park guests the opportunity to explore the mysterious universe of AVATAR first hand. Disney plans to build the first AVATAR themed land at Walt Disney World, within the Animal Kingdom park.  With its emphasis on living in harmony with nature, Animal Kingdom is a natural fit for the AVATAR stories, which share the same philosophy. Construction is expected to begin by 2013.
“James Cameron is a groundbreaking filmmaker and gifted storyteller who shares our passion for creativity, technological innovation and delivering the best experience possible,” said Robert A. Iger, President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. “With this agreement, we have the extraordinary opportunity to combine James’ talent and vision with the imagination and expertise of Disney.”
“AVATAR created a world which audiences can discover again and again and now, through this incredible partnership with Disney, we’ll be able to bring Pandora to life like never before. With two new AVATAR films currently in development, we’ll have even more locations, characters and stories to explore,” said James Cameron.  ”I’m chomping at the bit to start work with Disney’s legendary Imagineers to bring our AVATAR universe to life.  Our goal is to go beyond current boundaries of technical innovation and experiential storytelling, and give park goers the chance to see, hear, and touch the world of AVATAR with an unprecedented sense of reality.”
The agreement announced today gives The Walt Disney Company exclusive global theme park rights to the AVATAR franchise and provides for additional AVATAR themed lands at other Disney parks. The other locations will be determined by Disney and its international theme park partners.  James Cameron, Jon Landau and their Lightstorm Entertainment group will serve as creative consultants on the projects and will partner with Walt Disney Imagineering in the design and development of the AVATAR themed lands.
“This exciting new venture combines the world of AVATAR with the enormous reach of Disney and the incomparable talent of Jim Cameron,” commented Fox Filmed Entertainment chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman.  “While Jim is bringing audiences further into Pandora with the next two chapters in the AVATAR motion picture saga, the theme park attraction will likewise bring a new dimension to the amazing universe he created.”
“AVATAR is a uniquely powerful franchise that has global appeal with audiences of all ages. Its spectacular settings, intriguing characters, imaginative creatures, and strong themes of family and loyalty make it a perfect fit for Disney,” said Thomas O. Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “We can’t wait to give our guests the ability to journey to Pandora and explore the incredible immersive world of AVATAR in person.”
In addition to setting a global box office record, AVATAR has been hailed as one of the most innovative and visually stunning movies ever produced. With its advanced motion capture and 3-D digital projection technologies developed by James Cameron and his team, moviegoers were able to connect with the world of AVATAR in new and engaging ways.
This new venture complements Walt Disney Parks & Resorts’ strategic efforts to continue to invest in its core theme park businesses around the world while simultaneously expanding into other parts of the family vacation business.
