After 4 months of rehearsals and performances, Storybook Theatre’s production of Hairspray ended on a high note after 20 shows. It was bittersweet. I’m happy to have my free time back, while at the same time wondering when I can be involved with another incredible experience like this one. I’ve met so many incredibly talented & amazing people throughout this adventure. The passion each person had and the way a group of strangers could come together and execute such a massive production was incredible.
The entire reason I originally auditioned was to step out of my comfort zone, and this totally fit the bill. As our director J.P. told us, this was never being treated as community theatre. Why spend all this time if you’re just going to treat it second-rate? Learning the music, lines, choreography, blocking and everything else that goes with live theatre was time-consuming, challenging, stressful, overwhelming at times and I would definitely do it over again.
The amount of personal growth I felt over this process was amazing. My little tidbit of advice: ignore that little voice in your head saying you can’t do it. Sometimes you can’t shut it up, but just continue doing whatever it is you want to be doing. Fake it till you make it as they say, what’s the worst that can happen?
